UN General Assembly Proclaims International Day of Greening the Planet at Kazakhstan's Initiative

From now on, April 22 will be observed as the International Day of Greening the Planet. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by Kazakhstan. The initiative was put forward by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in September last year at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, 24KZ reports.

Nearly a year later, the proposal received the support of the international community and became an official document. The resolution was co-sponsored by 32 countries from different regions of the world.

The new international day is intended to promote environmental protection, the restoration of damaged ecosystems, the expansion of green spaces, and greater environmental responsibility among society. The document also calls on states, international organizations, and civil society to implement concrete initiatives in this area.

The idea aligns with the goals of Kazakhstan's nationwide environmental campaign Taza Kazakhstan.

- Today, the international community is facing a number of interconnected environmental challenges. Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, desertification, deforestation, water scarcity, and environmental pollution are having an increasingly serious impact on people's well-being and prospects for sustainable development. These challenges are global in nature. However, addressing them requires concrete action at the national and local levels. Therefore, protecting and restoring the natural environment is not only an environmental initiative, but also a contribution to society's ability to withstand challenges, its prosperity, and the well-being of current and future generations.
